Balule vs Selati: Choosing Your Walking Safari

Both reserves lie within the Greater Kruger ecosystem, offering unfenced access to the same free-roaming wildlife as the Kruger National Park itself, but each delivers a distinctly different walking safari experience.

Balule Game Reserve

Balule Game Reserve gives you variety and comfort in equal measure. Your walk will take you across sandy plains and granite hills in the south, then north to the Olifants River, where riverside trails, optional bush sleep-outs and boat tours add extra dimension to your stay.

The reserve is home to the Big Five alongside cheetah, wild dog and hyena, with 336 tree species and over 220 bird species to enrich every outing. Terrain is moderate throughout, so you can expect an immersive bush experience without demanding excessive fitness. At day's end, you'll return to a proper safari lodge, complete with air conditioning, Wi-Fi and a swimming pool.

SelatiĀ Game Reserve

Selati Game Reserve is the choice for those seeking greater exclusivity. Its roughly 30,000 hectares neighbour the Greater Kruger ecosystem but see far fewer vehicles and visitors, so your walks and sightings feel private and unhurried rather than shared with numerous other lodges and operators.

Your camp sits deep within a remote section of the reserve and follows a deliberately low-impact, off-grid philosophy. There's no Wi-Fi and no fences, only the rhythm of the bush and evenings spent around the fire under open sky. Tents are well-appointed nonetheless, with comfortable beds, en-suite bush bathrooms and shaded verandas overlooking the wilderness.

Walking Safari Seasons

Choose the season that best inspires you: during the dry winter months (May to September), enjoy cool early mornings around 11°C that gradually warm to a pleasant 24-27°C, with the sparser vegetation making it easier to spot wildlife gathering at water sources.

Alternatively, the vibrant summer wet season (October to April) offers hot, humid days that can soar to over 40°C, punctuated by refreshing short storms. This is also the time when migratory birds fill the skies and antelope birthing creates a lively, buzzing atmosphere in the bush.

Let your senses come alive on a walking safari that’s as personalised as it is thrilling. Book your journey today and discover the intimate beauty of Greater Kruger Park on foot.
